Yea... holidays in the middle of the week. It totally threw Ben off yesterday and it took him a long time to switch out of work mode only to go back the very next day (but it gave me plenty of time to get stuff ready for the afternoon). So, our adventure for the day got off to a pretty slow start and we didn't leave until after 12:30pm, but it worked out just fine. We went to Lake Piru for the afternoon, just to check it out, sit by the lake, BBQ, and do absolutely nothing for the day (we would have gone to Castaic Lake but they were charging $25 to get in). Nathaniel, Heidi and their kids joined us at the lake. The kids all had a fun time even though the lake was less than stellar. The lake is awesome if you have your own boat, but the swim beach is really small, no life guards, and really rocky and gunky once you're in the water. The scenery around the lake was really cool though. Oh, did I mention it was really windy? Poor Ben, he had the hardest time lighting the BBQ and keeping it lit... so much he just gave up after messing around with it for most of the afternoon.
After the lake we went and had BBQ at Nathaniel and Heidi's house and then from there we went to the town center to watch the fireworks. We had great seats to watch the show and Auntie Heidi joined us on the grass too. I wasn't expecting too much from the firework show since it was from the mall, but the show was really long and incredibly cool, and we were close enough that when they did the finally you could feel the gust of wind put off from the explosions. Lizzie didn't know what to think of it at first and she would turn and hide her head every time she heard a bang. I think they frightened her a little bit, but once she was in daddy's lap she was fine for the rest of the display.
It was a very nice break in the middle Ben's (and Nathaniel's) extremely crazy and long week, and we were all wiped by the time we went to bed (we didn't get home until 11pm). Hope you had a great 4th of July too!
